From Asaba to Ezhionum: Unveiling a Migration and Identity Journey

From Asaba to Ezhionum: Unveiling a Migration and Identity Journey

Our team returned from Ezhionum in Delta State after fieldwork with the Anioma Cultural Heritage project. There, we recorded oral histories from palace chiefs, elders, and community leaders. Although Ezhionum sits in Ukwuani country and now speaks the Ukwuani dialect, its people trace their roots to historic Asaba on the western bank of the Niger. Over generations, they migrated westward along river and forest “highways,” adapting customs and language to their new home. Today, no visible markers of Enuani heritage remain, yet the conviction of Asaba descent endures. A recent chiefs’ visit back to Asaba served as a powerful homecoming. It reaffirmed the “blood memory” that links Ezhionum to its riverine past.

I'm not so sure surprise is the right lens here. These stories feel more like familiar patterns than unexpected links.

It's interesting that Ezhionum now speaks the Ukwuani dialect despite belonging to the Anioma heritage roots.

I wonder whether these oral histories truly trace migration patterns or if they've been adapted by successive storytellers.

Researchers should involve local youth in transcribing these oral histories to preserve dialect nuances and community voices.
