Tinubu Greenlights Two New Satellites to Boost Nigeria’s Space Economy
Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved two new communication satellites, NIGCOMSAT-2A and 2B, for Nigeria’s space programme. She made the announcement at the 2026 Nigerian Satellite Week in Abuja under the theme “Harnessing Space Technology for an Extraordinary Nigeria.” Over the past two decades, NIGCOMSAT has evolved from operating a single satellite to offering broadband, broadcasting, and connectivity services across Nigeria and parts of Africa. The agency has secured a Low Earth Orbit partnership with Eutelsat and launched collaborations with the Kenya Space Agency. It now holds the Vice Chairmanship of the Global Satellite Operators Association. To nurture local innovation, NIGCOMSAT introduced an Accelerator Programme for satellite startups and Project 774 to extend connectivity to all local government areas. Military and regulatory leaders also highlighted the strategic role of satellites in intelligence, disaster response, and the expansion of digital infrastructure. Minister Bosun Tijjani reaffirmed the government’s commitment to satellite infrastructure, stressing its transformative impact on education, healthcare, agriculture, and commerce. He said Nigeria’s leadership in space technology carries a continental responsibility to build talent and foster pan-African partnerships.
