San Diego Mosque Shooting Leaves Five Dead, Schools Evacuated
On May 18, an active shooter opened fire at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont. Authorities say five people were killed, including two suspects who died from self-inflicted wounds. Eyewitnesses report that a mosque security guard helped usher worshippers to safety before being fatally shot. Helicopter footage and on-scene images showed officers surrounding the center and bodies under yellow tarps. Police evacuated an adjacent elementary school and other nearby institutions, including two academies and a charter school. Roughly 50 to 100 officers secured the area and canvassed the neighborhood. Local Muslim groups confirmed at least one mosque member died in the attack. Law enforcement agencies nationwide have increased patrols around places of worship as a precaution.
