Anambra Strengthens Partnership with TBAs to Improve Safe Deliveries

Anambra State Government has deepened collaboration with Traditional Birth Attendants across the state to cut maternal and infant mortality rates. A strategic meeting chaired by the Commissioner for Health at the state secretariat sought to register qualified TBAs and link them with healthcare facilities. The initiative will focus on regular training, supportive supervision, and a structured referral system. TBAs will be assigned to specific primary healthcare centres or hospitals, ensuring timely intervention when complications arise during pregnancy, delivery, or postpartum. Officials highlighted that the programme does not aim to shut down TBAs but to support them in meeting approved standards. The Health Commissioner and the Director of Medical Services urged unregistered but qualified birth attendants to come forward for documentation and full participation in the training programmes.

Sure thing! Teaming up with TBAs can bring care closer, using local trust to speed help for mums.

Meeting TBAs at the state secretariat is a decent start, but real impact depends on consistent training and monitoring beyond one strategic session.

I'm not convinced that registration alone will cut mortality rates; linking TBAs to formal healthcare must include funding and emergency transport options.

State health officials should establish mobile clinics that regularly visit TBA communities with basic equipment and quick referral protocols for high-risk pregnancies.
