Vice-President Shettima Leads Adoption of 10-Year National Food and Nutrition Policy

Vice-President Shettima Leads Adoption of 10-Year National Food and Nutrition Policy

At its 15th virtual meeting in Abuja, the National Council on Nutrition approved the National Policy on Food and Nutrition (NPFN) for 2026–2035. Chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the council directed the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning to present the policy to the Federal Executive Council for ratification. Stakeholders in both public and private sectors contributed to its evidence-based, multi-sectoral design. Shettima stressed that progress will be judged by the lives of mothers and children in all 774 local government areas. He urged every ministry, state and agency to align plans and budgets with the new policy within the next 12 months. The council also extended the timeline for the National Nutrition Bill by six weeks and expanded its drafting committee to include humanitarian and local government representatives. Funding will draw on domestic, bilateral, multilateral, private and innovative sources.

How will the new 10-year nutrition policy address persistent malnutrition hotspots across Nigeria, and what role can local communities play?

Exactly! That 10-year policy go dey sharp if local squads run kitchen gardens and track progress.

I'm glad to see this policy taking shape, though I hope communities get real decision-making power to tackle malnutrition effectively.

It's interesting they set a 10-year timeline, but budget reallocations often stall early. I wonder if this policy will really move the needle.

Approval at Abuja meetings looks good, but policies alone won't fix food access. Shouldn't we focus first on improving local distribution channels?

Communities could start by forming local nutrition committees to track policy rollout, gather feedback, and coordinate with state agencies for better accountability.
