May 9, 1987: Remembering Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Lasting Legacy
Today marks 39 years since Chief Obafemi Awolowo passed away in Ikenne, Ogun State. He rose from humble beginnings to become Premier of the Western Region and later Leader of the Opposition in Nigeria’s first Parliament. Under his leadership, the Western Region introduced free primary education and healthcare. He founded the Action Group, launched Africa’s first television station, and proposed the name “Naira” for our national currency. His efforts reshaped governance and development in Nigeria. In tribute, the Federal Government renamed the University of Ife as Obafemi Awolowo University three days after his death. His face on the 100 Naira note and the work of his foundation continue to honor his vision. If his model of free education and healthcare had been adopted nationwide in the 1950s, how different would Nigeria look today?
