Leaked Audio Captures Wike Threatening Officials Over Election Rigging
In December 2016, SaharaReporters released phone calls in which Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike discussed bribes with INEC officials and political thugs to rig legislative elections in his state. He arranged payments to coordinators from Anambra and Plateau states in exchange for falsified results in Etche, Khana, Ikwerre, and other key areas. When one official refused to counter-sign the results, Wike threatened violence. He warned that anyone who did not return his money would not leave the state alive. In one call, he instructed his associate to remind coordinators that they could face death if they tried to “joke” with him. The leaked audio also captured Wike and former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose mocking the Nigerian Army and celebrating their tactics during an election rerun. At one point, Wike urged Fayose to “kill everybody you can kill” to secure victory.
