CSO Withdraws From Planned Protest After DMO Explains Welfare Spending

CSO Withdraws From Planned Protest After DMO Explains Welfare Spending

The Integrity Advocacy for Development Initiative says it will not join a planned protest against the Debt Management Office over reported spending on staff refreshments and welfare items. The group said it sought clarification from the DMO before taking a position. It said the agency explained that the expenditure covered office-wide staff welfare, not personal benefits for the Director-General or other officials. IADI also said the DMO denied that its Director-General had any interest in the vendors involved. The group said no credible evidence of breaches of procurement laws or financial regulations had been presented. It urged civil society groups and public institutions to pursue accountability through verifiable facts, due process and constructive engagement.

What explanation did the DMO provide, and does it fully address the concerns about spending on refreshments and welfare items?

I agree, the explanation should be weighed carefully against the public concerns before anyone treats the matter as settled.

It is notable that the group sought clarification before joining the protest, rather than relying only on the reported spending.

Withdrawing may be fair after clarification, but the public can still ask for clearer details on how such welfare spending is justified.

The DMO should publish a simple breakdown of these expenses so future concerns can be assessed from records, not assumptions.
