Motorcyclist Gets Life Sentence for Raping Nursing Mother in Akwa Ibom

A motorbike operator, Michael Effiong Japhet, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo on July 7, 2026. He was found guilty of raping a married nursing mother and stealing her belongings in February 2015. The victim hired Japhet at Ekom Iman Junction to ride her home to Ikot Ofon, Ikono. He diverted to a bush path, threatened her with a knife, took her purse and phone, then raped her at knifepoint before fleeing. The next morning she recognized him, alerted her husband and the police, and her phone was recovered. Justice Archibong Archibong also handed Japhet three years for stealing, bringing to a close an 11-year prosecution by the state Ministry of Justice.
