From Deafness to Degree: Ode Lawson’s Journey of Resilience

From Deafness to Degree: Ode Lawson’s Journey of Resilience

Ode Lawson Ogamenyi was born unable to hear. His family feared for his future after discovering his deafness as a baby. Despite early setbacks and countless hospital visits, his aunt’s words—“This child will go to school and become great”—became his guiding light. He refused to let his disability define him. Ode completed primary and secondary school, earned a university degree and finished his NYSC. Then he founded the Ode Ogamenyi Foundation to champion disability rights. Today he writes, speaks and campaigns for inclusion. He hopes his story inspires parents and persons with disabilities to believe that faith and determination can overcome any obstacle.

Community schools should introduce basic sign language classes and mentorship programs early to help deaf students navigate academic challenges.
