Makinde Accuses EFCC of Political Interference Ahead of Osun Election

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of selectively targeting opposition-controlled states and interfering in political matters. Makinde questioned the EFCC’s freezing of an official state government account, arguing that the action was taken without due legal process. He said anti-corruption investigations must be fair, professional and free from political influence. The governor linked the timing of the action to the forthcoming Osun governorship election, warning that public confidence in democratic institutions could suffer if agencies are seen as tools of political intimidation. He urged Nigerians, civil society groups and the international community to defend the rule of law and institutional neutrality.

Clear public explanations of the legal grounds and process for any account freeze would reduce suspicion on all sides.
