Atiku Urges Immediate Release of El-Rufai Ahead of Eid, Calls Detention Unjust

Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on federal and Kaduna State authorities to free former Governor Nasir El-Rufai before the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. He described the continued detention as cruel, unjustifiable and a violation of civil liberties. Atiku warned that using state power to intimidate political opponents undermines democratic norms and national cohesion. He urged those in power to rise above political bitterness and ensure justice is served with transparency and due process. The demand follows a Federal High Court ruling granting El-Rufai medical treatment, as he and co-defendant Joel Adoga face a 10-count corruption and money laundering trial in Kaduna.

Do you think releasing El-Rufai before Eid could ease tensions, or might it spark more debate about accountability in governance?

It seems surprising that Atiku warns of civil liberties violations but doesn't address any due process concerns in El-Rufai's case.

I'm not convinced that immediate release is the best move—shouldn't we first review evidence and charges rather than rush for a holiday gesture?

A compromise might be to grant temporary bail under strict conditions, allowing Eid celebrations while the investigation continues without public unrest.
