I Want Temporary Custody of My Daughter Due to an Unstable Home

I am deeply worried about my daughter’s wellbeing. Her mother is going through a difficult period, and I believe the instability is affecting our child’s sleep, health and general care. I want my daughter to stay with me temporarily while we both work on improving our living situations. I still contribute to her upkeep, but I cannot yet afford a place for all of us. Her mother has given me an ultimatum to resolve our housing situation by the end of the month or accept that we may not be together as a family again. I accept that I was not financially prepared for parenthood, and our relationship has become too difficult to sustain. I am considering separation, but I want to remain actively involved in my daughter’s life and ensure she has a safe, stable environment. What options do I have regarding custody and co-parenting?

It sounds like your main concern is your daughter's wellbeing, not simply winning an argument during a difficult period.

Temporary custody may help, but it is worth being careful not to treat the mother's difficult period as proof she cannot parent.

Keep the conversation child-focused, document the care concerns calmly, and suggest a clear temporary routine both parents can review.
