Inside Abia’s Smart Schools: Digital Learning for 6,000 Pupils

Abia has opened its second Smart School at Umuomayiukwu Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North, expanding a state programme designed to bring digital learning and practical skills into basic education. The school has 10 classrooms, an early-childhood centre, an inclusive classroom, library, ICT centre, sickbay and a dedicated space for girls. It currently serves 261 pupils, with 23 trained teachers, and has capacity for 300 learners. Interactive boards, computers, internet access and solar-powered systems are being used to support teaching. The state says future facilities will also introduce AI-supported learning, virtual STEM experiences and continuous teacher training. Abia plans to build 20 Smart Schools across its 17 local government areas, with an estimated 6,000 pupils expected to benefit. Education observers, however, stress that reliable funding, maintenance, electricity and strong foundational literacy will determine the programme’s long-term success.
