Turning 65 in Service: ₦10 Million Gift to a Rural Hospital

Turning 65 in Service: ₦10 Million Gift to a Rural Hospital — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Today I marked my 65th birthday with deep gratitude and a reminder of our collective duty. In a nation where many still face poverty, unemployment, and ill health, celebrations should call us to service rather than self-indulgence. After a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, I visited St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri. There, I donated ₦10 million to support quality healthcare for patients who may not afford their bills. Seeing people at their most vulnerable reaffirmed my belief that true leadership is about compassion and dignity for all. Hospitals preserve lives and schools shape futures. Before month’s end, I plan to visit another institution—school or hospital—to make a modest contribution as a practical expression of gratitude. At 65, I remain convinced that life’s best celebration is the positive difference we make in the lives of others. May we work together to build a united, inclusive, and compassionate Nigeria, where service to humanity guides every milestone.

How did you decide on a rural hospital for your gift, and what support do they need most in that community?

Agree, focusing on a rural hospital really helps underserved areas. They usually need essential equipment, reliable power and trained staff most.

It's admirable to give such a large donation, but I wonder if it addresses the root causes of healthcare poverty in our rural areas.

Spot on, that donation shines bright, but real impact needs tackling those deep rural healthcare gaps.

Charity is good, but shouldn't we push for sustainable policies that prevent illness rather than relying on one-off birthday gifts?

You could partner with local health workers to set up basic training workshops and ensure the gift funds are managed transparently for long term success.
