Orania: South Africa’s Private Town Reserved for Afrikaners

Orania is a self-governing town in South Africa established in 1991, just before the end of apartheid. Founded by Afrikaners aiming to preserve their language, culture and traditions, it now has about 3,000 residents. The community uses its own currency (the Ora), runs its own schools, and supports an agro-based economy and small manufacturing industries. Afrikaans is the only official language. Only people who identify as Afrikaners may settle there, and residents handle their own labour rather than hiring outside workers.

What motivates Afrikaners to create a self-governing town like Orania in post-apartheid South Africa?

Is their drive for autonomy mostly about safeguarding Afrikaner culture, or are there other interests at play?

It's interesting they maintain their own currency and institutions, but doesn't that isolation limit broader cultural exchange?

I'm not convinced that keeping traditions separate is the best path forward in today's interconnected world.

Maybe they can partner with nearby towns for trade on the Ora currency while preserving cultural practices.
