Zelensky Ousts Ukraine’s Army Chief After Nationwide Protests
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Army Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. His removal comes days after the popular Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov was also sacked, sparking street protests across Ukraine. Fedorov, praised for modernizing the ministry and fighting corruption, was replaced first. Syrskyi, seen by many as too rooted in Soviet-era doctrine, has now been succeeded by battle-hardened General Mykhailo Drapatyi. In a social media address, Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for defending Kyiv during Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. He also revealed he offered Fedorov another senior role, though it remains unclear if he accepted. All changes will be formalized soon. Fedorov has already congratulated Drapatyi and urged faster reforms to correct past mistakes.
