Was Joseph Really a Widower? Examining the Claim of His Four Children

Some traditions say Joseph arrived in Nazareth with four children from a previous marriage. However, the New Testament offers a different account. Psalm 69:8 refers to the Messiah as a stranger to “my mother’s children,” a phrase the Gospels apply directly to Jesus. This wording points to Mary’s own offspring, not Joseph’s. Matthew 1:25 notes that Joseph abstained from marital relations until after Jesus’ birth and calls Jesus the “firstborn,” implying siblings followed. The Gospels in Matthew 13:55–56 and Mark 6:3 list Jesus’ brothers and sisters by name. Taken together, these passages show that the siblings attributed to Jesus were Mary’s children born after the virgin birth, not inherited from Joseph’s earlier family.
