Open defecation has fallen dramatically worldwide. Yet it remains common in several regions. In Sub-Saharan Africa, a large share of the population still lacks basic sanitation facilities. South Asia has seen notable progress, but the practice persists in some areas. By contrast, Europe, North America and much of East Asia have nearly eradicated open defecation through major investments in sanitation infrastructure. These patterns reveal more than geography.
