Defending the ICPC: Why El-Rufai’s Viral Video Misses the Point
The viral clip of Aisha El-Rufai lamenting that she was blocked from bringing food to her husband in ICPC custody has stirred strong reactions. However, a dispassionate look at established procedures shows that the commission simply enforced its standard visiting hours and security clearances. The ICPC did not deny basic rights or starve a former governor. All detainees receive meals under the agency’s welfare system. No one, regardless of status, has the right to bypass protocols designed to safeguard staff, detainees, and ongoing investigations. Choosing a social media spectacle over formal legal channels undermines the rule of law and damages institutional credibility. If there are grounds for complaint, the proper avenue is the courts or the ICPC’s internal appeals process. We must stand by the anti-corruption agency as it applies the law equally. Defending its procedures against political pressure is critical to preserving fairness and public trust.
