Lagos Butchers Shocked as Cow Prices Surge to ₦2.5 Million
The Lagos State Butchers Association has raised the alarm over soaring cattle prices. Prices have jumped to as high as ₦2.5 million this year, up from about ₦1.7 million last year. Alhaji Bamidele Kazeem blames insecurity, high fuel costs, and rising transport charges for the surge. He notes that moving cattle from northern Nigeria has become prohibitively expensive. A cow that once sold for around ₦1 million is now almost impossible to find. Many butchers and consumers are struggling to cope with the new price levels. The association urges the state government to fast-track the Eko Ranching project in Gbodu, Epe. They believe local ranching will boost supply, create jobs, and help bring meat prices down.
