Report: EU May Scale Back Election Observation Mission for Nigeria’s 2027 Poll
The European Union is reportedly considering scaling back its election observation role in Nigeria’s 2027 general election, ending a practice that has seen full EU observer missions deployed for every general election since 2003. Instead of sending observers across the country, the EU may retain only a small Abuja-based team to monitor developments and report to Brussels. The reported move has been linked to security concerns and tensions that followed the EU’s assessment of the 2023 elections. The EU’s 2023 mission identified systemic weaknesses in Nigeria’s electoral process and issued 23 reform recommendations. A follow-up review in 2025 found that only one recommendation had been fully implemented, while several key reforms remained incomplete ahead of 2027. INEC has previously indicated that it plans to invite the EU, African Union, ECOWAS and Commonwealth to observe the election. However, the absence of a full EU mission would remove one of Nigeria’s longest-running and largest international election monitoring operations.
