NNPC Moves to Block Dangote Refinery’s Import Licences, Citing Fuel Security Risks

NNPC Moves to Block Dangote Refinery’s Import Licences, Citing Fuel Security Risks

Nigeria’s state oil firm, NNPCL, has filed a defence in the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking to void or limit fuel import permits granted to rival marketers. The company warns that granting Dangote Refinery’s request to annul these licences could spark supply disruptions, price swings, and threats to national energy security. Dangote Petroleum Refinery had earlier sued Nigeria’s Attorney General over import licences issued by the Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The refinery argues these permits undermine local refining efforts and breach the Petroleum Industry Act. In its court filing, the NNPCL insists Nigerian law allows licensed local refiners and established traders to import fuel under a backward integration policy. It also faults Dangote for lacking credible evidence that its refinery alone can satisfy the nation’s fuel demand without interruption. Na the same NNPC allow the snake enter. Snake wan chop all the eggs wey dey basket. When we tell Nigerians, dem no dey listen.

Could NNPCL's bid to void Dangote Refinery's import licences trigger unexpected fuel shortages in some regions?

That makes sense, voiding those licences could tighten fuel supply and cause shortages in import-dependent regions.

NNPCL's claim of protecting fuel security feels selective when their own import deals faced minimal scrutiny until now.

Limiting Dangote Refinery's licences may harm competition and drive up costs, but maybe state firms just want to keep control.

Marketers and consumers should monitor court proceedings closely and explore alternative supply arrangements to mitigate potential disruptions.
