Nationalize MTN Nigeria Now: Reclaim Economic Sovereignty Over Xenophobic South Africa

South Africa’s recent xenophobic attacks have reopened old wounds. Nigerians’ sacrifices during the anti-apartheid struggle—songs, events, and moral support—now feel forgotten. Rejecting ungrateful treatment, we must defend our national interests. The Federal Government should form a panel to separate MTN Nigeria from its South African parent. MTN once repatriated funds far exceeding our reserves. Diplomatic caution stalled action then, but bold steps are needed now. Countries like Bolivia, Ethiopia, and China have successfully nationalized key telecoms to drive development and revenue. Nigeria has the professionals to manage MTN locally and align services with national priorities. We should also review diplomatic ties with South Africa and withdraw unprofitable operations. It’s time to reclaim our economic sovereignty, stop capital flight, and redirect telecom revenues to Nigeria’s growth.
