Two Arrested as FG Raids Illegal Gold Mining Camp in Osun

Two Arrested as FG Raids Illegal Gold Mining Camp in Osun

The Federal Government stepped up its fight against illegal mining by raiding a hidden gold camp at Ileki-Ijesa along the Ile-Ife-Ilesa Road in Osun State. Two young labourers, Danladi Isa and Musa Kabiru, were arrested and are cooperating to expose those financing the illicit operation. Officials from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and security agencies confiscated motorcycles, generators, mineral-washing equipment, long pipes, gold-trapping carpets, cutlasses and other tools. The camp was dismantled and sealed under the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act. The Southwest Zonal Mines Officer said this raid is part of a wider effort to protect the environment and enforce mining regulations across the South West. Authorities warned sponsors and handlers of illegal miners that they will face the full weight of the law. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development highlighted that over 300 illegal miners have been arrested and more than 150 prosecuted since the creation of the Mining Marshals. He appealed to community leaders and residents to report any unlawful mining activity and help safeguard Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The focus on two young labourers may not address the deeper issue of financiers behind illegal gold camps.

I'm not convinced that more raids will solve the root problem of illegal mining financing without community engagement.

Authorities should partner with local communities for intelligence sharing and invest in monitoring technology along the Ile-Ife-Ilesa Road corridor.
