Niger Military Government Suspends Nine French Media Outlets Over Security Concerns
Niger’s military government has suspended nine major French media outlets, citing threats to public order and national security. The National Observatory of Communication said the move aims to protect peace, social cohesion and the morale of defence forces. Outlets affected include France 24, RFI, AFP, TV5 Monde, TF1 Info and others. International press freedom groups have denounced the ban as a politically motivated crackdown on independent journalism. They have urged Niger’s authorities to reverse the decision immediately. Niger, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, is ruled by military juntas that have distanced themselves from Western allies while strengthening ties with Russia. Extremist attacks in the region have continued to rise despite promises of improved security.
