Rivers Assembly Threatens to Arrest Heirs Energies MD Over Ignored Summons

Rivers Assembly Threatens to Arrest Heirs Energies MD Over Ignored Summons

The Rivers State House of Assembly has given Heirs Energies Limited a final warning to present its managing director before lawmakers on July 20 or face legal action. This follows a petition by the Omuohoa community in Ikwerre LGA, which accused the company of unlawfully terminating contracts of local workers and sought their reinstatement. Heirs Energies has so far ignored multiple invitations from the House Committee on Public Petitions. Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule warned during plenary that a warrant for the MD’s arrest could be issued if the company fails to appear. The Assembly pointed to its constitutional power to enforce compliance. In a separate directive, lawmakers ordered Renaissance Africa Energy Company to commence cleanup and restoration after an oil spill along the Ogoni-Bonny pipeline near B-Dere community in Gokana LGA.

I agree, that arrest threat could shake locals' confidence in Heirs Energies unless they explain themselves fast.

It's odd that the company would ignore a legislative summons right before a public hearing and official deadline.

They claim legal action is the solution, but it feels like the Assembly is grandstanding without real intent to follow through.

The Assembly should set clear deadlines and outline potential consequences so both the company and community know what's at stake.
