Flash Flood in Utah Canyon Kills Provo Fire Captain and His Family
On July 17, sudden heavy rains in southern Utah triggered a flash flood through the red rock canyons near Bicknell. Five members of a Provo Fire Department captain’s family were swept away at Sunglow Campground. The victims were Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons Reid, Thayne and Gage. Their daughter Lydia, who did not join the hike, survived. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office recovered the bodies on July 17 and 18. The Provo Fire Department added a black mourning band to its badge and shared a message of heartbreak. A GoFundMe has been launched to support Lydia as she faces life without her family.
