Abuja Court Approves Ozekhome’s Six-Week UK Medical Trip Amid Forgery Trial

Abuja Court Approves Ozekhome’s Six-Week UK Medical Trip Amid Forgery Trial

An Abuja High Court has granted senior lawyer Mike Ozekhome permission to travel to the UK for medical treatment for six weeks. Justice Chizoba Oji noted that the prosecution had withheld the defendants’ passports and ordered them to present all travel documents in court. The judge ruled that Ozekhome’s passport be returned to the court by August 26. Ozekhome and co-defendant Ponfa Useni face 12 counts of forgery and impersonation over a disputed UK property. Prosecutors allege they created a false passport in the name “Tali Shani” and forged a power of attorney. Both men deny the charges. The trial is adjourned until September 28 for continuation.

How might granting Ozekhome six weeks of medical leave in the UK affect public trust in the legal process?

I agree, people might see this as special treatment and question consistency in our justice system.

It's odd that the prosecution held onto passports yet the court still approved international travel so quickly.

Are there details on why the court still approved the trip despite the prosecution holding the passports?

Are we certain Ozekhome's health concerns outweigh potential risks of flight? This decision seems hasty without more oversight.

Courts could require regular medical updates and deposit records to ensure defendants don't misuse approved travel.
