The Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested 23-year-old Sirajo Ali over the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl at knifepoint in Bundot, Dass Local Government Area. Police said the girl’s 29-year-old brother reported the incident on July 28. The suspect allegedly lured the girl into his room, threatened her with a knife and warned her not to raise an alarm or tell anyone. Detectives from the Dass Division reportedly arrested the suspect and recovered a knife said to have been used in the alleged crime. The case is to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Gender Laboratory for further investigation and prosecution. The Commissioner of Police condemned the alleged act and urged parents and guardians to report suspicious activity promptly.

The report is disturbing, especially given the child's age and the allegation that a knife was used.

An arrest is important, but people should avoid treating the allegation as a final verdict before the case is properly handled.

Police should ensure the child has safeguarding support, preserve evidence carefully, and communicate the case process clearly to the family.
