Have ₦10m for Study Abroad? Calculate the Full Visa and Relocation Cost Before Paying Tuition

If I had ₦10 million to study abroad in 2026 or 2027, I would not rush to pay a university. Tuition is only one part of the cost. Application fees, visa charges, health insurance, document verification, accommodation, flights, initial living expenses and exchange-rate changes can quickly consume a fixed budget. Before choosing a country or school, I would calculate the complete first-year cost. I would confirm the tuition or deposit required, the current student-visa financial evidence rules, accommodation costs, travel costs and an emergency reserve. Cheap tuition does not always mean a cheap relocation pathway. This matters for popular options such as the UK, Germany, Italy and Hungary. A low-fee university may still come with substantial financial requirements for a visa. I would also check deadlines, visa processing timelines, refund policies and whether I will still have enough money after arrival. I would avoid fake bank statements or unexplained deposits. My funding and sponsorship documents must be genuine, clear and acceptable to the relevant immigration authority. The goal is not simply to japa, but to choose a study route I can realistically afford to complete.

Which of these non-tuition costs tends to catch applicants off guard most: accommodation, health insurance, document verification, or exchange-rate changes?

Would the biggest surprise depend on the destination country and how early someone starts budgeting?

The reminder to budget beyond tuition is important, especially when several upfront expenses can arrive before a student has properly settled.

₦10 million is a useful starting point, but a single full-cost estimate may still be misleading without knowing the destination and accommodation situation.

Make a separate checklist for application, visa, insurance, travel, housing, and initial living costs, then leave room for exchange-rate movement before paying tuition.
