Hallyu Meets Afrobeats: A New Era of Nigeria–Korea Music Exchange
I explore how South Korea’s Hallyu Wave and Nigeria’s Afrobeats are now influencing each other in real time. I look at how Nigerian fans embraced K-dramas and K-pop on streaming platforms. Then I share my surprise at hearing Afrobeats rhythms in songs by Penomeco, BTS, Tomorrow X Together and others. I reflect on early criticisms of cultural appropriation in Korea and highlight artists who study Afrobeats culture sincerely. True exchange happens when artists work together and respect each other’s roots, laying the groundwork for a richer shared future.
