Debunking the Ijaw Minority Myth: Mapping Ijaw Presence Across Nigeria

Many believe Ijaws are a small minority, but their reach spans from Ondo through Akwa Ibom. Ijaws comprise 86 clans and nearly 2,850 villages. Their territories intersect with other groups in nine key zones: Yoruba (Ilaje, Ikale), Bini (Gelegele-gbene), Itsekiri (Warri), Urhobo (Aladja, Kiagbodo), Isoko (Okugbe), Ikwerre (Port Harcourt), Ogoni (Bodo-Bonny), Ibibio (Ibeno) and Igbo (Opobo). These overlaps show Ijaw communities are neither scattered nor marginal. Their presence predates modern state borders and remains vital to Nigeria’s cultural landscape. Let’s challenge the narrative of Ijaws as a minority and recognize their past, present and future contribution.

Really striking to see that spread. Shows how expansive Ijaw culture really is across so many regions.

It's interesting how the article highlights 86 Ijaw clans and nearly 2,850 villages, yet public perception still labels them a small minority.

I'm not convinced that mapping Ijaw presence in just nine overlap zones fully reflects their deeper inland settlements.

Local educators and cultural groups should incorporate Ijaw history maps into school curricula to foster broader regional understanding.
