Influencer Chukwudi Iwuchukwu Raises Alarm Over Extortion and Intimidation at Onitsha’s Nwugo Market

Social media influencer Chukwudi Iwuchukwu has called on Anambra State authorities to investigate alleged intimidation, extortion and unlawful arrests of traders at Nwugo Market in Onitsha. Iwuchukwu explained that his late father’s small beverage shop helped shape his childhood. He recalled that the market was officially commissioned before 1999 and traders received a valid certificate of occupancy under the last military administration. He says tensions rose after an individual began imposing unauthorized levies of ₦1,000 daily and ₦20,000 per delivery vehicle. Resistance to these fees led to the arrest and overnight detention of his younger brother and several other traders. Iwuchukwu warned that a “parallel authority” is operating outside state control. He urged Governor Charles Soludo’s administration to restore law and order before the situation sparks wider unrest.

I can sense traders' unease. Neighbours could form watch groups, document incidents, and notify authorities when they spot threats.

Claims of intimidation and unlawful arrests often surface in Onitsha markets, yet few cases ever see concrete evidence or clear official response.

Market association should document every incident and submit a detailed report to state authorities for proper investigation and support.
