Turning E-Waste into Wealth: Ogun Embraces Circular Economy Strategy

Turning E-Waste into Wealth: Ogun Embraces Circular Economy Strategy

At a recent workshop in Abeokuta, NESREA’s Director-General announced a new partnership with financial institutions to confront Nigeria’s growing electronic waste challenge. The event, themed “Transforming E-Waste into Opportunity,” gathered environmental and industry leaders to chart a sustainable path for disposal and recycling. Represented by the Environment Commissioner, the governor urged proper handling of end-of-life electronics to prevent soil and water contamination from lead, mercury and flame retardants. He highlighted that one tonne of e-waste can yield far higher concentrations of gold, silver, copper and palladium than traditional mining, calling it a “gold mine” for Ogun’s economy. Officials noted that Nigeria generates over half a million tonnes of e-waste annually and stressed that collaboration, innovation and adherence to best practices are essential. The workshop’s framework aims to drive job creation, protect public health and promote sustainable growth through a circular economy model. Participants commended its timely impact on awareness and capacity building.
