Nigerian Student, 21, Fatally Stabbed in Dublin – Father Shares Heartbreak
A Nigerian family is in deep grief after 21-year-old Qayyum Balogun, a third-year computer science student at Maynooth University, was fatally stabbed on Clarendon Street in Dublin during a night out. Qayyum had attended a gig at Bewleys Café, where he stepped in to help a woman being harassed. He was chased down Johnsons Court and stabbed three times shortly before 3am on June 1. His father, Ibrahim, had planned to visit Nigeria with his son before exams intervened. Ibrahim and Qayyum’s mother described the shattering pain of losing him so far from home. Dozens of mourners gathered at Newtown Cross Lawn Cemetery in Louth on June 16 for his funeral. The main suspect, an amateur rapper in his early 20s, was filmed fleeing the scene and later boasted about the attack online. Qayyum’s family are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help bring justice.
