Court Orders OAU to Restore Graduate’s ‘Pass with Credit’ and Pay ₦5m

A Federal High Court in Osogbo has ruled that Obafemi Awolowo University must correct a graduate’s degree classification and pay N5 million in damages. Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi found that the institution unlawfully downgraded Shekoni Jemima Oluwagbemisola’s result from “Pass with Credit” to “Pass” without justification. The court noted that Oluwagbemisola’s grade was publicly confirmed at the university’s convocation and in her Statement of Result. She only discovered the change when she applied for her original certificate. Internal attempts to fix the error failed, so she took the matter to court. In delivering judgment, the judge described the university’s action as arbitrary and reckless. Aside from the damages, the court ordered OAU to issue a corrected certificate reflecting “Pass with Credit” and awarded N800,000 for legal costs.

True, this decision might push other institutions to strengthen their review processes, but I remain cautious about its wider impact.
