US-Based Nigerian Doctor Rescued from Lynching by Mob in Ibadan After False Kidnap Claim

US-Based Nigerian Doctor Rescued from Lynching by Mob in Ibadan After False Kidnap Claim

Police in Oyo State averted a tragedy when they rescued Dr. Afolabi, a US-based Nigerian medical doctor, from a mob accusing him of kidnapping on May 12. The angry crowd had surrounded his Lexus SUV on Eleyele–Ido Road in Ibadan and set the vehicle ablaze. Two teenage girls found inside the car were taken into protective custody. Investigators later confirmed the girls were legally handed over by their guardian to visit the doctor’s mother and assist with household chores. Authorities say the misunderstanding began when the vehicle was stopped for a routine check at a polytechnic entrance. Language barriers and the doctor’s decision to drive off sparked suspicion and led to the false alarm. The Oyo State Police Commissioner has condemned jungle justice and warned that spreading unverified rumours threatens public safety.
