Delta Police Command Denies Custody Death Allegations, Warns Against Misinformation

Delta Police Command Denies Custody Death Allegations, Warns Against Misinformation

On 28 March 2026, the Delta State Police Command rejected claims by an activist that a suspect died under custody at Ekpan Police Station. The Command described the report as false, misleading, and intended to undermine ongoing crime-fighting efforts. A coordinated operation on 25–26 March, led by DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, arrested over 270 suspects across Ughelli and Warri. Large quantities of illicit drugs were seized. No casualties were recorded, and all unimplicated individuals have been released. The Command warned that spreading false narratives endangers public trust and distracts from security objectives. Anyone found peddling misinformation will face investigation, arrest, and prosecution. The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Residents are urged to rely on official statements for credible updates.

The force's swift denial coincides with intensified crime-data collection across the state, making timing quite notable.

I'm not convinced a single official statement can fully rule out custody abuses without independent oversight or third-party confirmation.

Civil society groups should request access to station logs and medical records to verify claims and inform public trust efforts.
