Abuja High Court Sanctions Substituted Service in Gen. Yahaya’s Defamation Suit Against Gen. Ali-Keffi and Media Outlets

Abuja High Court Sanctions Substituted Service in Gen. Yahaya’s Defamation Suit Against Gen. Ali-Keffi and Media Outlets

On 17 March 2026, the FCT High Court No. 2 in Abuja granted an order for substituted service in the defamation suit brought by former Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya. Under the order, the Court Bailiff must publish all originating processes in a national newspaper circulating in the FCT and paste them at the defendants’ last known addresses. The defendants include retired Major General Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi, ARISE News Broadcasting and Sahara Reporters. I'm not convinced this substituted service is fair to the defendants—it feels like a shortcut that might undermine due process.

Defendants should promptly instruct counsel once the notice is published, then file an appearance to prevent default judgment under the court's order.
