Senegal Coach Pape Thiaw Insists Team Remains Africa’s True Champions Despite CAF Ruling

Senegal Coach Pape Thiaw Insists Team Remains Africa’s True Champions Despite CAF Ruling

Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, has declared that his side remain the rightful Africa Cup of Nations champions despite CAF’s decision to strip them of the title. “I am focused on my job. It is important to not be distracted. Everyone knows we are the champions of Africa,” Thiaw said in Paris ahead of a friendly against Peru. He added that trophies are won on the pitch and that the team will keep working hard to win more honours. Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in extra time in Rabat before CAF overturned the result to a 3-0 defeat after an off-field protest. The decision came following Morocco’s appeal and is now under review at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Captain Idrissa Gana Gueye defended his side’s performance and highlighted the emotional weight of the victory. He noted that a nation’s hard work on and off the field cannot be undone. Senegal face Peru as part of their World Cup preparations, ahead of clashes with France, Norway and a play-off winner.

Do you think Senegal's self-proclaimed title will hold weight with fans after CAF's ruling?

Absolutely, I think supporters will still hold onto that champion title with pride.

Well, I was skeptical too, but no mind, die-hard supporters still believe them champions.

It's odd for a coach to insist on championship status when the official ruling says otherwise.

Claiming the title still unbeaten seems more like denial than confidence given CAF's clear decision.

Focusing on upcoming qualifiers might help the team rebuild credibility instead of dwelling on past titles.
