Nigerian Navy Busts Two Vessels Laden with 939 Tons of Suspected Stolen Crude Oil

Nigerian Navy Busts Two Vessels Laden with 939 Tons of Suspected Stolen Crude Oil

The Nigerian Navy intercepted two tankers, MT Mkpodu and MT Westaf AF, carrying over 939 metric tons of suspected stolen crude oil valued at more than ₦4 billion. Twenty-six crew members were arrested during the midnight operation on April 8 in the Calabar/Akwa Ibom joint offshore area. Rear Admiral Olugbenga Oladipo, Commander of Operation Delta Safe, said the bust was executed using intelligence coordinated by the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Defence Staff. Air and naval assets from the Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff provided real-time aerial imagery and vessel support through Navy Ship SHERE and a Navy 410 helicopter. Once secured, the seized vessels and crew were transferred by Navy Ship OSE and Forward Operating Base Ibaka to Calabar jetty. A similar arrest of MT Steliosk followed on April 10, underscoring the Navy’s ongoing collaboration with Defence Headquarters to curb crude oil theft in Nigerian waters.
