Fueling Food Security: Gov Eno Launches Subsidised Farm Equipment Leasing in Akwa Ibom — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Governor Umo Eno has commissioned a modern agricultural equipment leasing facility in Uyo as part of the ARISE Agenda. The project aims to transform farming into a mechanised enterprise and boost surplus food production across Akwa Ibom State. The first phase offers a 50% subsidy on leasing tractors and implements such as planters, harrows and ploughs. Farmers and local government councils are encouraged to take advantage of the scheme for improved harvests and more affordable food. The Governor praised Engr. Alorye Ogar, the project engineer, and Engr. Ifiok Ekott, the facility manager, for their dedication and quality delivery. He urged young people, especially women, to emulate their excellence and passion. This initiative complements other measures including free food distribution, a monthly civil servant work-free farming day and the provision of agricultural inputs. It underscores the administration’s commitment to long-term food sufficiency and economic growth.

Mechanisation could overlook local farming methods and soil conditions, leading to more problems if machines aren't suited to every smallholding.

Farmers could form cooperatives to share leased tractors and harvesters, reducing individual costs while maximising the benefits of mechanisation.
