Edo Police Launches High-Tech Unit to Curb Organized Crime and SGBV Surge
The Edo State Commissioner of Police has warned that criminal groups now operate in organized cells with defined roles. Traditional policing methods alone can no longer keep pace with kidnappers, cultists and armed robbers. To meet these challenges, the Command unveiled a Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) equipped with drones, high-tech surveillance gadgets, digital tracking and intelligence-led strategies. In one recent operation, officers rescued a kidnapped mother and son in Irrua and arrested 10 members of a notorious syndicate. The CP also raised alarm over a sharp rise in sexual and gender-based violence. Over the last two months, more than 23 suspects linked to rape and defilement were taken into custody. Since March, the Command has arrested 55 suspected kidnappers, 15 cultists, eight armed robbers and 15 murder suspects, while rescuing 58 victims. Led by CSP Osagie Godspower Etinosa, the VCRU will operate with professionalism and full respect for human rights. It is not authorised to carry out arbitrary stops, searches or profiling of citizens.
