What Adeleke’s Osun Victory Says About the Power of Voters
Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in Osun State is more than a personal or party triumph. It reinforces a core democratic principle: political power belongs to the people, not to godfathers, incumbency, money or federal influence. Despite the APC’s national political advantage, Osun voters made their own choice at the ballot box. The result shows that political structures and powerful connections do not automatically translate into votes. Voters can still reject predictions and reward leaders they believe have earned another term. The election is also a reminder that democracy depends on accountability. Politicians must not take the electorate for granted, while opposition parties must build credible candidates, communicate clearly and offer convincing alternatives. Those who win must keep serving, because the same voters who reward a government today can vote it out tomorrow.
