Ogu Alleges Rohr Snub Over Israeli League at 2018 World Cup

Ogu Alleges Rohr Snub Over Israeli League at 2018 World Cup — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Former Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu says he was overlooked by coach Gernot Rohr at the 2018 World Cup because of his Israeli league background. Ogu, who starred for Hapoel Be'er Sheva, did not play a minute in Russia after Rohr questioned the quality of the Israeli top flight. Speaking on a recent podcast, the 37-year-old recalled Rohr saying “our league is not at the top,” effectively downgrading his status in the squad. Despite that setback, Ogu earned 25 caps for Nigeria after debuting in 2013. He also praised Victor Osimhen, predicting the striker could hit over 50 goals in a season if he joined a top European club.

Do you think Rohr's doubts about the Israeli league influenced Ogu's World Cup benching unfairly?

On what basis does Ogu link Rohr's doubts about that league to his benching in the tournament?

I get you, ehn! Sounds like Rohr's hesitation could've really cost Ogu his spot.

It's interesting that Rohr openly questioned the Israeli top flight quality but still overlooked a player with solid club success.

Sure, league standards matter, but going from domestic clubs to international duty always involves personal trust between coach and player.

Players should consider league reputation when negotiating national call-ups, perhaps highlighting overseas achievements more clearly to avoid snubs.
