MultiChoice Petitions EFCC, Alleges ₦2bn Loss in Dispute With Moreplex TV

MultiChoice Petitions EFCC, Alleges ₦2bn Loss in Dispute With Moreplex TV

MultiChoice Nigeria, operator of DStv and GOtv, has petitioned the EFCC over allegations that Moreplex TV unlawfully intercepted and retransmitted its broadcast signals. MultiChoice also alleged economic sabotage, tax evasion and intellectual-property fraud, claiming losses of more than ₦2 billion. The petition comes amid a long-running commercial dispute over access to television channels and content rights. Moreplex had previously challenged MultiChoice’s refusal to sublicense some channels. Reports say a Federal High Court judgment in 2024 ordered MultiChoice to sublicense the channels and awarded Moreplex ₦200 million in damages. Industry observers say the new petition raises wider questions about competition in Nigeria’s pay-TV market and whether criminal enforcement should be used alongside an unresolved commercial dispute. The allegations against Moreplex remain unproven and are subject to investigation and due process.

What evidence will matter most here: proof of signal interception, the claimed ₦2bn loss, or the tax and intellectual-property allegations?

A petition is serious, but the allegations are still allegations until the EFCC and any court process establish the facts.

Both sides should preserve records, contracts and technical logs early; clear documentation will likely shape how this dispute is resolved.
