Toyin Lawani Turns Heads with Chair-Inspired Met Gala Couture
While Hollywood gears up for the Met Gala, Nigerian designer Toyin Lawani treated fans to her own version on Instagram. She showcased a dramatic chair-themed outfit, promising to “take you to the Met Gala 2026” under the theme “Fashion is Art.” A host of celebrities chimed in to praise her creativity. Rachael Okonkwo dubbed her “the queen of creativity,” BBNaija’s Prince Nelson called her “Chairlady of the Fashion Association of Africa,” and other stars like Toyin Abraham, Eniola Badmus, Liquorose and Princess Shyngle showered her with fire emojis and applause. This isn’t the first time Lawani has pushed boundaries. Last Valentine’s Day she dressed entirely in pepper, and at a past AMVCA she famously turned up in a sack bag. For Christmas 2023, she made a dress and cape from 1,000 pepper and 70 mops, sparking praise and criticism alike. Her bold designs have even caught international eyes. American rapper Cardi B’s daughter was spotted wearing one of Lawani’s hand-painted jackets, earning the Nigerian designer well-deserved global recognition.
