FG Urges Airlines to Hold Fare Hikes as Jet A1 Prices Skyrocket 300%

FG Urges Airlines to Hold Fare Hikes as Jet A1 Prices Skyrocket 300%

The Federal Government has asked airline operators to pause any planned increase in airfares and reconsider suspending flights after Jet A1 prices jumped from ₦900 to ₦3,300 per litre. In a letter from the Aviation Minister to the Airline Operators of Nigeria, the government warned that immediate ticket hikes would burden travellers, depress demand and limit access to air travel across the country. The minister also highlighted the broader economic risks of grounding flights and assured operators that a high-level stakeholders’ meeting will be held in Abuja to find a sustainable solution.

No be small thing to expect airlines to absorb a 300% fuel price hike without passing some cost to travellers, though.

Airlines might explore more efficient flight schedules and tighter maintenance budgets to offset rising Jet A1 costs before raising ticket prices.
