Ekiti Plans Tougher Tobacco Law to Curb Vapes and Nicotine Pouches
The Ekiti State Government has announced plans to update its tobacco control law to cover emerging products like vapes and nicotine pouches. The move aims to protect public health, especially among children and young people exposed to odourless nicotine devices. During a World No Tobacco Day stakeholder meeting in Ado-Ekiti, health and environment officials pledged to strengthen enforcement, boost funding, and expand school-based and community programmes. They highlighted past achievements, including the 2012 smoke-free public places law and Ado-Ekiti’s citywide smoke-free declaration, while acknowledging challenges such as limited monitoring capacity and industry interference. Speakers called for a legal review to reflect global best practices and for active involvement of parents, traditional and religious leaders, and youth advocates. Civil society representatives also warned against tobacco industry tactics that target young Nigerians with flavoured nicotine products and misleading marketing claims.
